Art & Art History Research Lecture Series: Laura Smith

Dr. Smith will present her research in a lecture titled, 'Talking Back': Visualizing Modern Identities and Histories in Native American Family Portraits from Oklahoma, 1890-1940. Smith examines the connection between the pervasive national indigenous effort in the early twentieth-century to counter the popular visions of Indians as a "vanishing and conquered race" and the burgeoning desire among Native Americans in Oklahoma for photographic representations of families. more information...
